Clarinet Cake

My mom didn't let me join the band when I started junior high, I wanted to play the clarinet, but she thought it would mess up my braces so, I never learned to play the clarinet. This week though, I learned to MAKE a clarinet!

This is a full size clarinet made of rice krispie treat, fondant and gumpaste. This thing is 25 inches long and I made each piece by hand and then painted them silver. The initials CR are at the top to represent the 15 year old I made this for.
The clarinet was made to be an accent to a cake for a birthday party.
The cake is a 16 inch, 12 inch, and 8 inch chocolate and vanilla mix with buttercream icing and marshmallow fondant covering. I cut each musical note free hand and painted some purple and some silver. The 15 and the bow on top are the only parts that are non-edible.
The clarinet is obviously not attached but you can see the dowel rod that supports it.

I am hoping to update this post with a picture of the cake at the venue with the birthday girl.

From this cake I learned; clarinets are big and have lots of little pieces. I also learned that while I love the taste of my chocolate cake recipe, I need to find one that is a little more firm. The middle chocolate layer was very difficult to work with.
This is the cake all out together at the event.
"Thank you so much for the cake.  The birthday girl loved loved it.  She did not want anyone to cut it.  Also it put her mom into tears.  Her grandmother came from Mexico and also burst into tears and said it was something she has never seen before."
